(“If you just learn a single trick, Scout, you’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.-Atticus finch”)
Atticus Finch is one of my favorite character in the literature world. He is a fictional character from the Harper lee’s award winning novel “To kill a Mockingbird” (1960) in which he is a lawyer who represents a “black”man in a fictional Maycomb county, Alabama.
“Atticus is just a fictional character” “Atticus is just a creation from the mind of Harper lee” these are the bitter truths that saddens me deeply whenever i think about him, but i don’t care if he is a fiction, in my world he is more alive and real than anything. His wise words rings in my ears everyday, his undaunted courage, and unprejudiced opinions makes him a legend.
(“The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience.”-Atticus finch)
If there is any word in any language to represent Atticus then it will be the most sophisticated language in the universe, but sadly there isn’t. Even millions of words are not enough, it requires illuminated eyes to see his path. We can learn so much from him, the temerity he showed when the whole world is against him because of the decision he took to represent the black man. The undaunted confidence even in the worst of times. He believed “his” rules, he fought to his life for what he believed is right.
He respected Justice but not enough to elude the real justice by leaving a man who is enduring the unbearable inequity the world casting on him. He knows he can’t win it, he knows he doesn’t have the power to change the world, but that doesn’t stop him from doing what he wanted to do. His endeavors are not for winning, he does it for himself, to satisfy his righteous soul.
(“You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.”-Atticus finch)
He is the strongest person i have ever seen, he proved that fighting with brain is better than fighting with muscles. Even when is humiliated by Bob Ewell (jerk) in the middle of the street, he just pitied him.“Jem, see if you can stand in Bob Ewell’s shoes a minute. I destroyed his last shred of credibility at that trial, if he had any to begin with. The man had to have some kind of comeback, his kind always does. So if spitting in my face and threatening me saved Mayella Ewell one extra beating, that’s something I’ll gladly take. He had to take it out on somebody and I’d rather it be me than that houseful of children out there. You understand?” this converse with his son jim proves that. He can wear the skin of his worst enemy, think like him and understand his problem, what more do you expect from a human?.
“This time we aren’t fighting the Yankees, we’re fighting our friends. But remember this, no matter how bitter things get, they’re still our friends and this is still our home.”
His way of seeing things is enlightening, his treats his children like adults and respects them. He never lies to his children, even for the most embarrassed question, he answers in most understandable way possible.
“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.”
He can’t fly, cant beat 10 members simultaneously, cant’t save the mankind from the deadly virus that destroys all the humanity, he wont work for the S.H.I.E.L.D but still he is my favorite hero.
